Governor Gary Locke and a number of US entrepreneurs are on a
four-day visit to Viet Nam to seek for cooperation opportunities.
PM Khai stressed the importance of expanding cooperation
between Viet Nam and the US into a more stable and long-term
development for the benefit of the two peoples. Along with
boosting economic ties, cooperation in culture and education was
crucial, the PM stressed.
Washington was the first state of the US which resumed
cooperation with Viet Nam after the nomalisation of the bilateral
relationship, PM Khai stated, praising the State's support of Viet
Nam's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). He
expressed his belief that Washington State would further
strengthen cooperation with Viet Nam in the future.
Governor Gary Locke emphasised his State's long-standing
cooperation with Viet Nam and its contributions to US exports to
Viet Nam.
He reaffirmed that the visit was aimed at boosting cooperation
with Viet Nam in culture and education to contribute to further
developing mutual understanding. He said Washington State was
ready to receive Vietnamese students to the state to study and to
open universities' bureaux in Viet Nam.
Governor Gary Locke, since arrival in Viet Nam on Monday, has
met with Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien, Finance Minister Nguyen
Sinh Hung, Planning and Investment Minister Vo Hong Phuc, Ha Noi
Mayor Nguyen Quoc Trieu and Ha Noi Vice Mayor Nguyen Thien Nhan.
He also attended a business forum in Ha Noi.
He expressed his wish that Washington State would continue
being Viet Nam's leading partner among other states of the US. He
praised the role of the Vietnamese community's contributions to
Washington's socio-economic development and said he was ready to
call on the US Government to support Viet Nam's joining the WTO.
Washington has potential in aviation, software, apple and
potato growing and wine processing.
It earned 736.4 million USD from exports to Viet Nam in 2003,
making up 55.6 percent of the US's total.
Washington State's Seattle chief city set up relations with Hai
Phong northern city of Viet Nam in 1998.-Enditem
