Ha Noi, Dec. 21 (VNA) - The four Red River delta provinces of Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Binh Dinh and Ninh Binh will benefit from the first phase of a project concerning safe water and rural hygiene, which will be implemented from 2005-2010 at a cost of 10-12 million USD.

The project, made possible by World Bank loans and non-refundable aid from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), comprises four parts - building and upgrading infrastructure facilities for water supply and hygiene; education to change hygienic habits for better community health; raising the capacity of the community and local agencies to implement the project; and supervising project management.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, as many rural water supply systems in the Red River delta are operating ineffectively, the project is primarily aimed at meeting the people's demand for safe water supply and hygienic services; and ensuring that the poor can access these services free of charge.-Enditem

Fish-breeding farmers in central Ha Tinh province's Duc Tho district have changed their traditional aquaculture know-how thanks to a Danish-funded project on fresh water fish rearing.

After four years of implementation, these farmers know how to choose the best fry for rearing and prevent them from contracting diseases during the rearing process.

Under the project, fish are being reared on 154ha of ponds and paddy field, yielding an average of 2.5 tonnes per ha, a 30 percent increase over 2000. In addition, 43,800 sq.m for fry rearing has been established under the cooperation between the project and the provincial Centre for Technology Transfer and Science-Technology Application.-Enditem
