EU’s Investments in Vietnam Growing Well

 http://www.asemconnectvietnam.gov.vn/asemvn/asps/news.asp?idnews=5748&tuan=12
According to economic analysts, the European Union (EU) will continue being a key partner of Vietnam after it admits 10 new members in the coming May, triggering its population to over 500 million.

Since the early days of the implementation of the Foreign Investment Law, many enterprises of France, the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, etc came to Vietnam. Up to now, there have been 11out of 15 member states of the EU performing in vestment projects in Vietnam. Currently, the EU has 372 in-effect projects with the total registered capital of over US$6 billion, of which some $4.2 billion was disbursed. The EU has created over 39,350 jobs in Vietnam.

Out of the in-effect projects, the industry and construction sector made up 201 projects worth roughly $3.73 billion in terms of total registered capital, $2.84 billion of which was disbursed, the service sector accounted for 129 projects valued at over $1.87 billion in respect of total registered capital, of which about $1.04 billion was disbursed, and the remaining projects are for agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

EU’s enterprises mainly invested in such 3 fields as heavy industry, oil and gas, and transport and post. Investments in these three fields made up over $4 billion of registered capital and nearly $3 billion of disbursed capital.

In regards to investment forms, 100% foreign-owned enterprises have possessed 225 projects with the total registered capital of more than $1.39 billion, of which $783 million was disbursed, and attracted approximately 24,600 direct laborers; the joint-ve nture companies make up 122 projects worth nearly $1.16 billion in total registered capital, of which $742,5 million was disbursed and it created about 11,870 jobs; the remaining projects are invested in post and telecommunications, oil and gas and econo mic-technical infrastructure building taking the forms of Cooperative Business Contract (BBC), Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), Build-Transfer (BT) and Build-Transfer-Operate (BTO).

The EU nations are also big donors for Vietnam, making up over one third of the total amount of ODA capital supplied to Vietnam by the International Donors Community, of which non-refundable ODA usually makes up high percentage. Given Switzerland aided Vietnam non-refundable ODA amounting nearly $2 billion.

Trade and tourism relation between Vietnam and EU’s members has been increasingly boosted. Currently, Vietnam’s export receipt to the EU market has been higher than $3 billion and imports from this market attained nearly $2 billion. The EU’s visiting tou rists to Vietnam account for one third of the international visitors coming to Vietnam. See table below for EU’s FDI in Vietnam up to February 20, 2004:
